HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM MN-FISH.
During this season of hope and gratitude, let’s reflect on this past year and the ongoing efforts to keep Minnesota’s fishing strong.
When MN-FISH was formed in 2018, none of us—officers, members, doubters—could have realized what needed to be done, what could be done, what could be accomplished to recognize Minnesota as the ‘’State of Fishing’’ (sorry hockey fans).
Now we know there was much that could be done to shorten the time between bites. If you’re wondering what those accomplishments have been so far, please go to our new website, mn-fish.com—and see for yourself.
In the meantime, the fishing issues, the fishing problems, the fishing questions continue to come up and sometimes involve MN-FISH. For example, our efforts in the Legislature to replace a 125 year old fish hatchery has required patience. Growing concern over widespread chemical spraying of invasive aquatic vegetation is spreading from Lake Minnetonka to lakes far beyond the metro. The state’s bait industry continues to evolve for the better as both sides—bait businesses and DNR fisheries staff— continue working together trying to improve bait availability.
The greatest issue, the greatest threat to good fishing in Minnesota, is—in our opinion—the declining fish management program and the decrease in DNR’s fisheries management budget in recent years. You can’t raise fish, stock fish, measure fish populations or survey fishing success without enough staff and dollars. Our Legislature has been starving fishing for years, depending only on fish license increases. What’s needed from the Legislature are regular appropriations of general revenue to DNR’s fish management operations.
Oh, there’s more. Excessive populations of stunted northern pike; barotrauma killing crappies; shortage of shoreline fishing sites; more hatchery and public access repairs; fishing class in schools….no end, right?
